Run 4/15

I got out a little early in the afternoon, so I drove over to the Redmond Watershed for a nice trail run. I did the 5 mile loop in about 53 minutes, running on RPE since my HRM is out for repair.

My left foot felt fine, maybe just a slight touch of stiffness that felt like plantar fasciitis. It has been a while since I've run. I'll be sure to stretch my foot more before running next time.

Rest 4/14

Today is a classic example of why I need to try to pack in some workouts in the morning. Some coworkers are visiting from the FL office, and they stopped by to invite me to dinner. We had a leisurely dinner and then moved to a piano bar/lounge and suddenly it is 10:30 pm and I'm tired and stuffed. Oh well, tomorrow I am sneaking out to run, and possibly bike if the weather is reasonable.

Bike Fit

I took the Cervelo into Sammamish Valley Cycles, for a bike fit with Mike. After taking a few measurements and watching me on the bike, he suggested a different bar/aerobar setup than what I had (the Cinelli Angels).

The good news was after trying out a Syntace bar and Syntace C2 clip-on aerobars, I was much more comfortable. The Cinelli's are very low and agressive, requiring a very forward position that I just couldn't get comfortable with. The Syntace bar was just a bit narrower, which was more comfortable, but the real win were the clip-ons: they sat on top of the bar which lets me ride more upright. Plus, they were shorter and angled up and far more comfy to reach for.

Anyway, I left the Cervelo there - not all parts were in stock so the work will be done on Monday. After that, the process will be iterative. As Mike describes it, you'll get comfortable at a certain position, and then tweak it just slightly (remove some of the spacers on the head tube) and repeat. Still, having a comfortable cockpit will be critical to enjoying the ironman bike course.

Bike 4/12

I finally fixed the flat on my race bike. I tried patching the previous inner tube, but when I reinflated the tire the patch popped off a bit and the leak opened. Item learned: carry more inner tubes because the patch kit is unreliable. ;)

After that, I took off the tire and rim tape, scuffed the inside with some cloth to remove any crud that built up, and replaced the inner tube. Then I examined the tire but didn't see anything like a sliver of glass, that would explain this. If it goes flat again I suppose I'll just buy another tire.

Anyway, I was able to do 1:33 on the trainer, in the 39x15 at a cadence of 80-85 at 90 Watts, while watching After the Sunset.

Rest 4/11

I drove over to JHS intending to swim, but it is spring break and there is only morning lap swim. So... if I can possibly get up on Wednesday morning I'll go then.

IMAZ Reports

So I've read a few race reports. Everybody mentions the high winds, which I expected. What I didn't expect were complaints about the bike course.

I remember looking at the map and the thing looked like a pretzel. Apparently many competitors (we're talking 25+ people here, including two pros) missed one of the last turns and wound up unintentionally cutting the course short by 6 or 7 miles. These people were all DQ'ed - except the pros, who were aware enough to ask an official what to do. The reply was: go back and finish the loop before continuing the run.

Ouch, that has to be super disappointing. Good thing T2 didn't miss the loop!

Rest 4/10

Rest day. Need to catch up on sleep.

Not to over-exaggerate things, but in many ways T2's finish feels like a finish for all of us (primarly JHS and me). Of course, we weren't on the course battling it out, it is more that it gives us a giant amount of inspiration. We've trained with T2, seen and experienced how hard it can be. So her finish gives us a lot of confidence that we can do it too.

Plus, T2 finished so happy looking. Almost like she had a great time and had a lot of fun during the event! ;)

Spectating was fantastic; I'm so glad I went.

Ironman Arizona

I'm spectating!! No workout, but there was a lot of walking involved. ;)
